Yesterday Pork Chop and I made a Valentines box for his classroom. We took a shoe box, wrapped it in brown paper and colored on it. Well when Mama came home and saw it she said, “You are not as good as the best Stay At Home Mom!!!!!, I can’t believe…” Well you can imagine the rest. So Pork Chop and I will be redoing the box this afternoon. We will be making a cool alligator that opens up and has teeth! Much better. While looking for ideas I saw this awesome idea.

Here is the link to the site where I found it.

I will send a picture of the Valentine Eating Alligator once we are done this afternoon!

Great idea!

DSCN1982For those of us who were in Cub Scouts in our youth the Pinewood Derby brings to fond  memories of fun and speed. If you are not familiar with the derby, I will explain. Every year Cub Scout Packs around the country pass out pine wood kits. The kit consists of 1 wood block, 4 plastic wheels and 4 nail axels. The Cub Scout and his parent must then transform said block into a car that weighs five ounces or less. All of the scouts in the Pack will then race their cars down a 36 – 42 foot race track on the day of the derby.

The hard part is making the car. Making the car fast, stylish and fun! Skeeter has been a scout for three years now. The first year we made a spectacular car. We worked on it for a month. It was very shapely and looked good. It did not win the race, but Skeeter and I were both proud.

Then year two we procrastinated. I made a kit car and it showed. We won nothing!

This year we spent a week working on the car and it was a nice blend. It did not win the race but did come in 9th overall. So it was a good car.

This year we also made a car for Pork Chop. It looked a lot like a Chevrolet Camaro. Mama  designed it from a model of a Trans Am that is on our book shelf. The car was 10th over all in speed but won 5th place in the finals because it was the fastest of the siblings.

Skeeter was mad. Pork Chop was happy.

All in all our Pinewood Derby was a success, kids had fun and Skeeter and Porkchop had fun!

The derby is a great experience of competition and sportsmanship and is a wonderful tradition.

Last week was my first week at home all day with Porkchop. Mama and I pulled him out of pre-K after his graduation ceremony. Nothing wrong with the school at all, we just had to make the transition to home and that seemed to be good timing.

Keeping up with the housework with him home is a bit more difficult. I can see that large projects will have to be broken up into more segments when I have the boys at home. I could use the good old tv babysitter to take care of this, but one of our stated reasons and goals for me staying home was to get Porkchop ready for Kindergarten which he is not quite ready for.

This week we did flash cards 2x per day and worked on letter specific worksheets. In addition I wanted to him to do some fun projects such as science experiments and art projects. One day Porkchop painted Cascarones.

latinworks_2053_16193560 What are Cascarones ?

Cascarones are confetti filled egg shells hand painted and brightly colored.
Cascarones’ egg shell have a very small opening on one end and the inside is drained out. The empty shell is thoroughly washed and then dried. The clean shell is now filled with confetti and sealed with a tissue paper. Cascarones are brightly colored.

How did Cascarones originate?

Cascarones have an uncertain beginning, however historians have traced their birthplace back to China. It’s believed that they were brought from Asia by Marco Polo. These original eggs were filled with a perfumed powder and the eggs were used as gifts. From Italy the tradition was carried to Spain and then to America. Carlotta, the wife of Emperor Maximillian, was so fascinated by the eggs that she brought them to Mexico during her husband’s rule in the mid 1800’s.

In Mexico people replaced the perfumed powder with confetti. It was then when Mexicans labeled the egg shells…. Cascarones… Which derives from the word "Cascara" which means shell. In Mexico Cascarones were popular at one time, but the tradition eventually faded. Only in the late 1960s and early 1970s Cascarones regained popularity in South Texas, where it has now become a family tradition. Some make very creative Cascarones’ designs that sell for as much as $10 for one Cascaron.

Throughout Mexico and the American Southwest, Cascarones are used to celebrate. The fun is derived from breaking the egg over someone’s head; allowing the confetti to spill out. Prior to Easter, or during “Fiesta San Antonio” churches and schools do fund raisers by selling Cascarones. Others just enjoy cracking them over their friend’s heads. Many say… the confetti shower brings good luck and good fortune ! but if anything they are lots of fun and almost addictive !!

Hello all and I am sorry that it has been so long since my last post. I have been busy transitioning to full time Dad. My last week at work is this week and there has been a lot to do. I sell insurance and there is a lot to transition over on my current leads. As I write this, Astro our fat cat jumps up on the desk and flops down. What a life they have. I clean up their poop and feed them and even pet them when they feel like getting petted. But I digress…. I am currently working on Operation Organize the House (OOH). If you missed that post check it out here.

I have been spending a lot of time at the baseball park so it is slow going.  One thing that I did accomplish is that I cleared one side of the garage. You can actually park a car in there now. I also installed eight sets of hooks for the four bikes that are in the garage right now.

Pork Chop’s last day at full time day care is Friday, so starting Monday I will have him with me all day and Skeeter after school at 3 pm. This will be a challenge for sure.

I have to focus this weekend on getting the week organized.

My list of to do’s is as follows:

  • Study plan for Pork Chop
  • Daily Schedule : Must include education, physical activity, character building and fun time (gotta have some of this) – House cleaning rotation schedule finalized
  • Work ahead in school so that I am ahead 1 week before my surgery on the 29th

I must do some homework now, so Hasta La Vista!
